It offers a genuine perspective on this and on German culture in general, at the historical moment when, between the Napoleonic occupation and the rise of Nazism, through the revolutions of 1848 and 1919 and the establishment of the Empire, Germany was taking shape as a modern nation. Most of the great German artists are represented: Friedrich, Runge, Overbeck, Marées, Stuck, Menzel, Kollwitz, Dix, Beckmann... They engage in dialogue with writers, thinkers, philosophers, and musicians, from Goethe to Wagner, from Nietzsche to Thomas Mann, from Schiller to Heinrich Heine.
